Italy's most avant-garde furniture brand, turning design into cultural statement since 1946. Discover Cappellini at Salone, Las Vegas.
CAPPELLINI
Cappellini is a story of radical curiosity and invention. Founded in 1946 in Carugo — a small town near Como and Milan, in the heart of the Brianza furniture-making region — the brand began as a family carpentry workshop rooted in artisan tradition. Everything changed when Giulio Cappellini joined in the 1980s with a singular ambition: to make the company a laboratory for the world's most forward-thinking design. What followed was the creation of one of the most influential furniture houses in history.
01. Cappellini
Giulio Cappellini's approach was unlike any other in the industry. Rather than dictating trends, he traveled the world in search of emerging designers whose work had, as he put it, "emotions." Through that tireless pursuit, he discovered and launched careers that would go on to define contemporary design globally — Jasper Morrison, Tom Dixon, Marc Newson, Marcel Wanders, the Bouroullec brothers, Nendo, and Shiro Kuramata among them.
Cappellini does not fit neatly into any single aesthetic category. The collection moves freely between spare minimalism and exuberant invention, between rigorous functionalism and objects that exist purely as expressions of imagination. Simplicity coexists with flamboyance. The formal and the playful occupy the same catalog. That eclecticism — held together by an unwavering commitment to quality and conceptual depth — is what makes Cappellini genuinely singular.
02. Cappellini: A Workshop for Ideas
Cappellini's catalog spans decades of collaboration with the world's most compelling designers — from enduring icons to current work that continues the same tradition of material intelligence and conceptual rigor. The pieces from the Cappellini’s collection represent that range: objects with distinct personalities, each with a story behind it.
Bong Table
Designed by Giulio Cappellini himself in 2004, the Bong is one of those objects that looks entirely self-assured: a solid sphere with a flattened round top, finished in faux Carrara marble using a Dip-Print three-dimensional decoration system over a hollow fiberglass core. The result is a table that reads as heavy stone but lifts like almost nothing. Sculptural, ironic, and precise — it's exactly the kind of object that makes a room feel considered.
S-Chair
Few pieces in the Cappellini catalog carry the weight of the S-Chair. When Giulio Cappellini first saw it at an exhibition in London in the late 1980s, he put it into production immediately — and it went on to make Tom Dixon's international reputation. The S-Chair's sinuous form is handwoven in rush, seagrass, or upholstered in fabric and leather; the tension between its organic silhouette and the demands of industrial manufacturing was solved through pure craft. It lives today in the permanent collections of major design museums. A contemporary classic in every sense.
Giunto
Designed by Finnish master cabinetmaker Antrei Hartikainen, Giunto takes its inspiration from the smooth, eroded forms of water-worn stones and nature-sculpted rock. The lens-shaped top connects to the base through a single, deliberately off-center attachment point — which is the whole idea. That minimal joint allows the tabletop to rotate and shift, giving the piece a quiet, surprising playfulness entirely at odds with its composed appearance. Nordic precision, Italian production.
Thin Black Table
Oki Sato's studio Nendo has a gift for making you look twice at something that seems impossible. The Thin Black Table — designed in 2011 — is built from two off-axis cubes in matte anthracite steel that intersect in an L-shaped configuration, supporting an ultralight glass top. An Escher labyrinth brought into three dimensions and made perfectly functional.
