Flexform - Groundpiece Sofa
Groundpiece is the sectional sofa designed by Antonio Citterio for Flexform, first introduced in 2001 and continuously in production since. It remains the brand's undisputed best-seller — a sofa that redefined proportions before the rest of the industry followed. Low, deep, and deconstructed, Groundpiece anticipated the way people actually live on a sofa: reading, working, eating, stretching out.
Available in Las Vegas through Salone, Groundpiece is a fully modular system configured to each project — from a compact two-seater to a room-scale sectional.
Design of the Groundpiece Sofa
The defining gesture of Groundpiece is the armrest. Citterio rethought it as a functional surface rather than a boundary: it can be specified as a padded, upholstered element, or as a metal frame clad in saddle-hide leather — a console that works as a shelf, side table, and bookcase in one. Books, a laptop, a glass of wine. The sofa carries its own architecture.
The proportions are equally deliberate. The seat sits low and runs deep, producing a posture closer to lounging than sitting — relaxed, informal, close to the ground, as the name suggests.
Materials
The frame is metal, padded in molded polyurethane and covered with a protective fabric lining. Feet are metal with an epoxy lacquer finish. Poufs are built on solid wood frames.
Seat cushions in the premium version are filled with sterilized goose down certified by Assopiuma (gold label), structured around a supportive inner core so they hold their shape. A polyurethane and Dacron fill is available as an alternative. Back cushions are goose down, with or without the signature roll.
All covers are completely removable — in fabric or leather, drawn from Flexform's full textile collection: linens, cottons, velvets, cashmeres, nabuk, and leathers. The saddle-hide armrest is available in a range of colors, including sand, grey, tobacco, olive, black, and dark brown, plus suede variants.

Configurations and Customization
Groundpiece is a true modular system. Elements come in a range of widths and two generous depths, combined freely with poufs, chaise elements, and armrests — from the slim padded version to the full bookcase armrest.
Compositions include:
Linear, along a single wall
L-shaped, turning a corner
U-shaped, enclosing a room
Open-ended and island-like, floating free of the walls
Every module comes apart and reconfigures, so the sofa adapts when the room changes — or when you move. The collection also extends beyond the sofa itself, with the Groundpiece chaise longue and complementary pieces.
